Soul singer Teddy Pendergrass has died. Pendergrass’s son
said the 59-year-old died Wednesday night at Bryn Mawr Hospital after a “difficult
recovery” from colon cancer surgery 8 months ago.
Pendergrass began his music career as a drummer with
Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in 1969. He became the frontman of the band in
1971. They’re hits include The Love I Lost and I Had the Blues.
In 1976, Pendergrass started his solo career and became
the first black male singer to have five consecutive muti-platinum albums. His hits
include If You Don’t Know Me By Now and Turn Off the Lights.
Pendergrass was left paralyzed from the waist down after
a 1982 car accident.
