California Had Most Foreclosures in 2009 in the Country

In total, 3,957,643 foreclosure filings, which include default notices, scheduled foreclosures auctions and bank repossessions, were reported on 2,824,674 properties in 2009, according to RealtyTrac Inc.

 

That’s a 21 percent increase from one year ago and a 120 percent increase from 2007.

 

Four states accounted for more than 50 percent of the nation’s 2009 total, with over 1.4 million properties receiving a foreclosure filing in California, Florida, Arizona and Illinois combined.

 

Of the four states, California topped the list at 632,573 properties receiving a foreclosure filing.
