Sudan has executed six men found guilty of participating in a riot at a refugee camp in Khartoum in 2005 that left 13 policemen and five civilians dead.
While the six men confessed their guilt Amnesty International called the admissions forced, saying officials tortured the men into their admissions. The six men were said to be responsible for igniting the violence at the Soba Aradi camp where refugees from the country’s civil war had been housed.
The executions sparked outrage among many in the country who called the sentence politically motivated. According to reports several of the men had been from the southern section of Sudan while the others were from Darfur.
SPLM, the main southern political party, called the executions a “political issue” and “there were many irregularities in the court proceedings.” Those sentiments were echoed by Amnesty which insisted there had been a “blatant failure” in ensuring the men had a fair trial.
