The product liability attorneys at Morgan & Morgan are alerting consumers of the potentially hazardous side effects that have been linked to long term use of Reglan. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a black box warning for Reglan stating that long term use of this drug can lead to a neurological disorder known as tardive dyskinesia.
Reglan is a prescription drug used to treat patients suffering from gastrointestinal disorders, including acid reflux disease, heart burn, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Also know by its generic name Metoclopramide, Reglan works by speeding up the movement of the stomach muscles. This in turn increases the rate at which the stomach empties into the intestines. Reglan has also been prescribed to pregnant women who suffer from morning sickness, individuals who are undergoing cancer treatment, and post-operative patients. It is available in several forms, including Reglan tablets, Reglan oral disintegrating tablets, metoclopramide oral solution, and Reglan injections.
Although Reglan and other drugs containing Metoclopramide are safe under certain circumstances, they should only be used for a brief period of time (usually no more than three months). Research shows that long term use of Reglan has been linked to tardive dyskinesia, a neurological disorder that can lead to spontaneous and uncontrollable muscle movements. Infants and the elderly appear to have the highest risk for developing this serious side effect.
Tardive dyskinesia is characterized by involuntary, repetitive movements of the face and body. Symptoms of this condition include grimacing, lip smacking, rapid blinking, and puckering or pursing of the lips. Involuntary movements of the fingers, hands, arms, shoulders, legs, and trunk are additional symptoms of tardive dyskinesia. There are currently no effective treatments for tardive dyskinesia.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with tardive dyskinesia after taking Reglan, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
