U.S. Sends Troops to Haiti to Aid in Earthquake Relief

The United States has sent nearly 6,000 troops to Haiti to provide further relief to the country following Tuesday’s devastating earthquake that has left an untold number dead and injured.

Some reports have estimated the death toll could hit one hundred thousand and while that figure seems high there remain countless people missing, buried beneath the rubble of fallen buildings and homes. Reaching those trapped under the debris has been a struggle as Haiti lacks the proper machinery to move large slabs of concrete for a relief effort.

On Thursday U.S. President Barack Obama vowed to the Haitian people that they would “you will not be forsaken, you will not be forgotten” and ordered troops to be deployed to the capital of Port-au-Prince to assist in the rescue and recovery of victims.

In addition to manpower Obama promised $100 million for the relief efforts in Haiti and said that support would grow as the situation turned into a long-term recovery.

As many as three million people are said to have been affected by the earthquake that destroyed most of the capital. Relief agencies have said those who survived the quake are in desperate need of medical supplies, food, water and shelter and if those items don’t arrive then many of those survivors could die.
