Hobbies are — often quite literally — fun and games. Some offer physical health benefits, while others promote creativity and expression. Whatever hobbies a person enjoys, it’s important to be aware of possible skin concerns and discover how to keep skin safe. Here’s an excerpt from Skincare-News.com's latest article, "Potentially Risky Hobbies for Skin," with tips for how to maintain healthy skincare during activities that can irritate the skin.
1. Working out at the gym. Breaking a sweat at the gym may be great for the body, but the germs that survive on mats, weights, exercise machines and sweaty clothes can put the skin at risk of bacterial or fungal infections. Dehydration is also a concern, since indoor air is often dry and saps the skin of moisture. To help protect skin, clean off all equipment before use, stay hydrated and shower and change as soon as possible after working out.
2. Playing musical instruments. Musicians can be sensitive or allergic to metals or woods that are found in instruments. Allergies can cause contact dermatitis symptoms, such as rashes, breakouts, eczema and irritation anywhere that skin comes in contact with the instrument. Depending on what a person plays and where or how the instrument is held, musicians can also experience rubbing or chafing, blisters or calluses, chapped lips and cold sores. To avoid breakouts, keep instruments clean from acne-causing bacteria and oil. Other skin conditions can be managed by using proper playing technique, trying different materials if allergies develop and limiting the length of practice sessions.
3. Gardening. Sun exposure isn’t just a threat to the face; for gardeners, hands are especially prone to UV damage. UV rays break down collagen and elastin—proteins that give skin its structure—and dry out skin, which can lead to wrinkles. In addition, UV rays can cause brown or black age spots on the hands. To keep skin safe, apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of the body; spray on insect repellant and ivy blocker to prevent bug bites and irritation; and invest in gardening gloves. Gardeners can also consider going organic—skipping pesticides and chemicals in the garden minimizes skin irritation and other risks.
