While ‘American Idol’ contestants have grown accustomed to sweating out the weekly elimination vote on Wednesdays, hoping to survive for one more week, there’s a new twist to the game starting tonight.
As a result of no contestant being eliminated on last week’s “Idol Gives Back” series there will be two ‘Idol’ wannabes sent packing on Wednesday.
The good news for a few of the contestants is that last weeks votes will carry over to this week and be added to their total following their performance tonight. That bodes well for Jordin Sparks, Melinda Doolittle and Phil Stacey who earned high marks for their “inspirational” songs.
While Sparks, Doolittle and Stacey may benefit the carryover votes could hurt LaKisha Jones, Blake Lewis and Chris Richardson as none of the three really brought their A-game last week.
Add to the mix this week’s theme of rock and roll with Jon Bon Jovi stopping by to lend a hand and there could be some serious problems for a few of the contestants. The problems could grow even more if they cover a Bon Jovi tune, but that’s neither here nor there.
Sparks and Stacey are hitting their stride at this point while Doolittle and Lewis have been consistent throughout the competition. LaKisha has cooled considerably since the beginning of the season and Richardson is a guy that has kind of flown under the radar for the better part of the competition.
So with Jones and Richardson likely needing to deliver their best performance to remain in the top four the Bon Jovi thing really comes into play.
There’s almost no way Sparks or Doolittle will be sent packing regardless of what they do tonight. Blake might have an advantage over the others but after not doing much with John Lennon last week imagine what could happen with Bon Jovi. Stacey has a kind of hidden advantage in that Jon Bon Jovi has used a lot of country influence in his recent music and Phil has been attacking that genre with great success over the past two weeks.
Maybe there’s no point to trying to figure out who goes home before a song is even sung but that’s the way the show goes. The audience likely picked their ‘American Idol’ winner a few weeks back.
