By the end of the day the AFC and NFC will have their championship games set and for the Minnesota Vikings and San Diego Chargers if Sunday’s action goes the way it did on Saturday they’ll be pretty happy. Both home teams, the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts, won yesterday and the Vikings and Chargers will be at home Sunday after enjoying a bye week. Minnesota will get things started against the Dallas Cowboys with kickoff set at 1:00 p.m. ET and San Diego will follow against the NY Jets with kickoff set at 4:40 p.m. ET.
The Vikings-Cowboys matchup has grabbed a lot of attention as many question Minnesota’s ability to handle the Dallas defense. Brett Favre has had arguably his best year in his career and it could take one of those special games to hold off the hot Cowboys. Minnesota will need to get some help offensively from Adrian Peterson and if he can establish a running game it should open up the passing lanes for Favre. As for the Cowboys they have been clicking in every sense. Tony Romo seems at ease after silencing some critics with an impressive end to the regular season and big win over the Philadelphia Eagles last week. The Cowboys have found a running game by committee and Romo has enough receivers to keep the Vikings honest. Sunday’s game should come down to turnovers and whoever takes advantage of the mistakes should make their way to the NFC championship game to face the New Orleans Saints.
As much as Rex Ryan has said his NY Jets should be the favorite to win the Super Bowl most people believe they’ll see their playoff run end on Sunday when they travel to face the San Diego Chargers. While the Jets have had a tremendous run defensively and are coming off a huge road playoff win against the Cincinnati Bengals the San Diego Chargers are a different animal. Led by Philip Rivers the Chargers offense is as explosive as it gets and the Jets will need to put pressure on the San Diego quarterback if they are to have any chance. Offensively, the Jets don’t exactly strike fear in the oppositions defense and they’ need another flawless game from rookie Mark Sanchez if they are to upset the Chargers. San Diego will look to bury New York early and the Jets will have to take it on the chin and not fall if they are to have any chance of winning. If San Diego’s defense can limit the Jets running game and force Sanchez to pass the Chargers should be traveling to Indianapolis to meet the Colts in the AFC championship.
