For the first time since the 2004 Orange Revolution Ukrainians will be heading to the poll to elect the country’s president.
With many Ukrainians still questioning the government’s ability to tackle corruption the end appears near for incumbent President Viktor Yushchenko. The president has been blamed for failing to implement a number of reforms, something that was expected after he took office following the Orange Revolution.
Yushchenko’s unpopularity has opened the door for former Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych who is said to be ahead in the polls. Yanukovych could find his greatest challenge coming from current Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko who has been a vocal critic of Yushchenko’s leadership.
While Ukrainians look to elect new leadership it is unlikely it will happen in the first round of balloting as a candidate will need to secure at least 50% to avoid a second round.
