The 20-year reign of the Social Democrats could be coming to an end in Chile as voters take to the poll in the second round of the country’s presidential election.
Conservative candidate Sebastian Pinera is a clear favorite to win the election after securing 44% of the votes in the first round, well ahead of Social Democrat Eduardo Frei. Pinera is attempting to become the first conservative leader since Gen Augusto Pinochet who stepped down from office in 1990.
Frei is the Social Democrats leading candidate, and has pledged to continue many of the policies implemented by Michelle Bachelet. In 2006 Bachelete captured the presidency, becoming the first woman to be elected to head the country but the constitution prevents her from seeking re-election.
For Frei, he is seeking his second term as president after a ten year absence from the leadership position. While many expect Pinera, who owns a television station and is part owner of a popular Chilean football team, to win there are those who have said the results will be much closer than the first-round outcome.
