Brett Favre was 15/24 passing for 234 yards and four touchdowns, Sidney Rice had six receptions for 141 yards and three TDs, and the Minnesota Vikings sacked Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo six times and forced three turnovers in a 34-3 dismantling on Sunday to advance to the NFC Championship game against the New Orleans Saints next week.
Favre put the Vikings in front 7-0 in the first quarter when he found Rice on a 47-yard touchdown and that advantage held into the second quarter. Dallas cut their deficit to 7-3 when Shaun Suisham kicked a 33-yard field goal but Minnesota quickly built reestablished their cushion as Favre and Rice hooked up again, this time on a 16-yard pass over the middle to make it 14-3. Ryan Longwell then tacked on a 23-yard field goal to give the Vikings a 17-3 advantage at the half.
After a scoreless third quarter Longwell pushed the lead to 20-3 early in the fourth with a 28-yard field goal and the Favre put the game away when he hit Rice on a 45-yard TD strike go up 27-3. Favre capped the day with an11-yard touchdown toss to Visanthe Shiancoe with less than two minutes left.
While Adrian Peterson didn’t put up huge numbers he did finish with 63 yards rushing on 26 carries and the Vikings collected 109 yards on the ground to keep the Cowboys defense honest. Defensively the Vikings limited the Cowboys to just 92 yards rushing and held Romo to 198 yards passing and picked him off once.
