The New York Jets continued to silence their doubters, heading into San Diego on Sunday and knocking off the Chargers with a dominant second half 17-14 to punch their ticket to the AFC Championship game next week against the Indianapolis Colts.
Offense was hard to come by in the opening half as the Chargers put the only points on the board with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Philip Rivers to Kris Wilson in the second quarter.
That 7-0 lead was cut to 7-3 early in the third quarter when Jay Feely kicked a 46-yard field goal for the Jets. New York grabbed their first lead of the game in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter when Mark Sanchez found Dustin Kelller on a 2-yard strike in the back of the endzone. After forcing the Chargers to punt the Jets built some breathing room when Shonn Greene took a handoff on 3rd and 4 and went 53-yards for a touchdown and a 17-7 advantage.
While San Diego was down by ten they still had a shot at cutting into their deficit but Nate Kaeding’s 40-yard-field goal attempt with just under five minutes left sailed wide, leaving the Chargers in a desperate situation. The Jets played conservative and opted to run the clock, eventually punting away and Philip Rivers finally put together a scoring drive for San Diego, capping a 78-yard drive with a one-yard keeper to pull the Chargers to within 17-14 with 2:14 left.
San Diego attempted an on-side kick that was recovered by the Jets and when faced with a 4th and 1 Rex Ryan kept his offense on the field and Thomas Jones iced the game with a two-yard gain.
Greene finished the game with 128 yards but it was his 53-yard burst in the fourth quarter that made the difference. For the Chargers, they’ll be looking at the points they left on the field as Kaeding missed three field goals
