While Andy Roddick made his way into the second round at the Australian Open the American didn’t exactly use his typical power game to get past Thiemo de Bakker in the opening round. Instead, Roddick used a controlled tempo to dispatch de Bakker in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.
Roddick managed just 7 aces in the match compared to 17 for de Bakker but he limited his unforced errors to just 25 compared to 43 from his opponent. Instead of trying to hammer his serve Roddick concentrated on accuracy and it paid off as he collected wins on 75% of his first serves put in play and didn’t see his serve broken in the match.
Roddick has one Grand Slam singles title, the 2003 U.S. Open, while he has reached three Wimbledon finals and the U.S. Open finals in 2006, all three finals losses came at the hands of Roger Federer. Roddick’s best finish at the Australian Open has been the semifinals, something he has accomplished four times, most recently last year where he fell to Federer.
