U.S. General Warns Death Toll from Earthquake in Haiti Could Hit 200,000

The devastation from last week’s earthquake in Haiti continues to worsen as victims remain trapped under countless buildings in Port-au-Prince and basic relief items like food, water and medical supplies has been difficult to transport to the worst hit areas.

According to estimates as many as 70,000 people have already been buried in mass graves and U.S. Lt Gen Ken Keen has said that death toll could hit as high as 200,000 as the disaster was of “epic proportions.”

While aid has been flowing into the country the distribution of that aid has been problematic as the country’s infrastructure has been nearly destroyed and the airport is experiencing bottlenecks as the supplies sits.

Rescue crews continue to search for survivors and have pulled several victims from buildings. On Monday American search teams said they rescued ten people from the rubble on Sunday, a positive sign of hope that while it has been six days since Tuesday’s quake there are still survivors.
