Venus Williams began her pursuit for her first career Australian Open title with an easy straight set victory over Lucie Safarova, dropping the Czech 6-2, 6-2 in her opening round matchup in Melbourne.
Williams controlled the match with her serve as she collected points on 76% of her first serves put in play and 57% of her second serves. The American also protected her serve, allowing Safarova just five chances to break her serve and allowing it to happen just once. Williams broke Safarova’s serve five times while capitalizing on 34 unforced errors to advance.
Venus Williams has seven Grand Slam singles titles, five of them at Wimbledon and another two at the U.S. Open. The American has reached the finals at the Australian Open and the French Open but lost to her sister, Serena Williams, in both of those Grand Slam finals.
