Violence Between Muslim and Christian Gangs in Nigeria Leave at least 149 People Dead

Muslim and Christian gangs clashing in the Nigerian city of Jos has left at least 149 people dead and that total could rise significantly as the violence spreads.

For the past two days the divided city has been paralyzed by gunfire and arson as the two groups have taken to an all-out assault on the other. Jos is split into Muslim and Christian areas and has long been considered a ticking time bomb.

That time bomb exploded on Sunday but it remains unclear what actually ignited the violence. There have been reports that the clashes began following a football match but others have said it began after an argument concerning the rebuilding of homes that had been destroyed in clashes from 2008. Those clashes left at least 200 people dead.

According to a mosque worker 19 corpses were buried on Sunday evening and another 52 were buried on Monday. That same worker said 78 bodies are yet to be buried. The total death toll in the violence is not yet known as there has been no figure concerning Christian deaths.

Jos is now under a 24-hour curfew with security forces enforcing the order.
