In an effort to reduce the number of babies who develop a preventable form of blindness, lawyer Richard Shapiro has recently launched www.babyblindness.com, a website dedicated to informing parents about retinopathy of prematurity.
Retinopathy of prematurity, or ROP, affects premature babies and babies born with very low birth weights. For full term babies, the eyes’ blood vessels develop fully inside the womb. For babies with ROP, the vessels continue to grow after birth, resulting in abnormalities. These vessels leak fluid that can stick to and possibly detach the retina. If doctors fail to recognize and timely respond to ROP, the disease will result in blindness or vision loss. Screenings and treatments like laser surgery can prevent babies with ROP from going blind, but hospitals and medical professionals need to respond to the dangers early. Attorney Shapiro’s new website contains information about this condition, resources for expectant mothers, videos about ROP and solutions for parents if medical malpractice resulted in their child’s blindness.
Richard Shapiro, founder of the Shapiro Law Group, encourages all families to visit his website and research the risks associated with ROP: “It is completely unacceptable for any of these cases to result in permanent blindness,” Richard Shapiro said. “ROP is treatable, and ROP blindness is preventable. I urge all expectant mothers, especially those at risk of delivering their child prematurely, to ask your doctor about retinopathy of prematurity. Make sure the hospital NICU staffs a qualified pediatric ophthalmologist who has experience monitoring and treating ROP.”
About Richard Shapiro
Attorney Shapiro has more than 30 years of legal experience, primarily in the field of medical malpractice. He served as a medical assistant to his father, a well-known Yale radiologist, in the early stages of his career. Now, he is one of the few attorneys in the nation who focuses his practice almost exclusively on babies blinded by negligence related to ROP. Since ROP is statistically rare, most lawyers are inexperienced regarding this disease. Attorney Shapiro, however, has a proven track record of successful recoveries for families affected by ROP blindness.
