Voters in Massachusetts have taken to the polls to fill the vacant Senate seat left after the passing of Edward Kennedy and while Republican state senator Scott Brown is said to be leading Democratic Attorney General Martha Coakley the race remains too close to call.
At stake is the Democrat’s power in the Senate as they currently hold a filibuster-proof majority but if Brown were to take the election that would provide Republicans with the ability to slow President Barack Obama’s plans to pass his healthcare reform bill.
Coakley was seen as a sure thing to replace the Democratic stalwart Kennedy following death in August but a less-than-inspired campaign and an active Brown has turned the election on its side. Even with Obama traveling to Boston on Sunday to lend support Coakley appears to have fallen from favor among Democratic voters while Brown’s campaign continued to gain strength.
