New Jersey Welcomes First Republican Governor in 12 Years

World News Update by EQUITIES Magazine

Christopher Christie became New Jersey’s first Republican governor in 12 years. He promised “brighter days ahead” for residents.

“You voted loudly and clearly for change and you have entrusted us with what may be our last, best hope for a stronger New Jersey,” Christie said today in his inaugural address at the War Memorial in Trenton.

Christie is replacing Jon Corzine after voters blamed the Democrat’s handling of the U.S. recession that left the state with the highest unemployment rate in three decades. The state has the largest budget deficit per person of any U.S. state.

“The era of runaway spending and higher and higher taxes has not worked,” he said. “Today, we are taking a new direction. A new era of lower taxes and higher growth will begin.”
