Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said he would be sending an ambassador to Ukraine for the first time in five months after President Viktor Yushchenko failed to finish as one of the top two candidates in Sunday’s election.
Medvedev has long accused Yushchenko of promoting “anti-Russian” policies and Sunday’s results were warmly welcomed by Moscow. Last year Medvedev appointed Mikhail Zurabov as ambassador but refused to send him while Yushchenko remained in office.
Yushchenko’s unpopularity in Russia was echoed by the Ukrainian people at the polls as the president could only manage a fifth place finish in the first round of voting.
Sunday’s election left two challengers for next month’s run-off, Viktor Yanukovych and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, both of whom have expressed a desire to strengthen Ukraine’s relationship with Russia.
