Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has said that while his National Congress Party did not want the south to secede he would not stand in their way if they voted for independence in a referendum scheduled for next year.
Bashir made his announcement during a ceremony marking the five year anniversary to the end of the north-south war. The president declared, “if the result of the referendum is separation, then we in the NCP will be the first to take note of this decision and to support it.’
While Bashir has said the decision will be placed upon southerners there are many in South Sudan who have already said the president is working to fix the referendum. South Sudan is oil rich and politicians don’t believe Bashir would let go of those resources.
Critics of Bashir have said the president was already arming rival ethnic groups in the south in an attempt to destabilize the region, an allegation he has denied.
