FBI Arrests 22 in Undercover Sting Targeting Bribery

An undercover sting conducted by the FBI resulted in the arrest of 22 people, all charged with conspiring to bribe an African country over a $15 million arms sale.

The investigation revealed that those arrested attempted to pay bribes to government workers of an undisclosed African country in return for an arms deal designed to equip its presidential guard. As part of the sting the FBI used an undercover agent to pose as a sales agent who then brokered a deal that would have resulted in a 20% “commission” which would have been split with the minister of defense.

As part of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act citizens and businesses as well as foreign people and companies acting in the U.S. are forbidden to extend bribes to foreign governments in an attempt to keep or land contracts.

The arrests represented the largest investigation and prosecution under the law. According to reports 21 of the arrests took place in Las Vegas while the 22nd occurred in Miami. Five of tose arrested were said to be UK nationals.
