They appear to come from two completely opposite worlds: Brett Favre is the quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings and is currently running his team through the NFC playoffs; American Idol is a hit FOX reality program showcasing the talents of hopeful singers while attracting a mainly teen audience. One man brought the two together, “General” Larry Platt.
It was Platt’s original composition “Pants on the Ground” that made its way from the American Idol audition floor to the locker room of the Minnesota Vikings following last Sunday’s victory over the Dallas Cowboys. The Vikings feature a roster full of 20-somethings that might be familiar with the goings-on of American Idol but it was 40-year-old Brett Favre who busted out a few lines of the song that has swallowed the Internet and already garnered several covers.
While Favre may have taken some liberties in the wording of “Pants on the Ground” it was no doubt a clear indication that the three-time NFL MVP knew his American Idol. As strange as hearing Favre belt out a few celebratory lines is the fact that Platt, who auditioned for American Idol in Atlanta, is significantly older than the 28-year-old age limit established by the talent contest. In fact, Platt is 63-years-old and probably has more things in common with Favre than he does with the kids he stood in line with while waiting to audition.
Favre hasn’t declared “Pants on the Ground” the Vikings new victory anthem but plenty of people will be tune in on Sunday when the Vikings face the New Orleans Saints for the right to go to the Super Bowl. A Vikings win, could it earn “General” Larry Platt a spot on the Super Bowl’s halftime stage?
