Andy Roddick continued to display his revamped game, opting for a more controlled approach and taking apart Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the third round at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Roddick again dominated with his serve, collected points on 78% of his first serves put in play. While Roddick did hit 11 aces he didn’t rely on the power of his serve as much as he did on keeping Bellucci on the defensive. That approach paid off as Bellucci committed 43 unforced errors compared to just 13 for Roddick.
Roddick has one Grand Slam singles title, the 2003 U.S. Open, while he has reached three Wimbledon finals and the U.S. Open finals in 2006, all three finals losses came at the hands of Roger Federer. Roddick’s best finish at the Australian Open has been the semifinals, something he has accomplished four times, most recently last year where he fell to Federer.
