Stephen Jackson scored 33 points, Baron Davis added 20 points and 10 rebounds and Matt Barnes finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists as the Golden State Warriors crushed the Dallas Mavericks 111-86 to shock the defending Western Conference champions and advance to the second round.
Heading into the third quarter the Warriors were hanging on to a 50-48 lead but that quickly swelled to 80-57 as Golden State went on a 30-9 run to bury the Mavericks. During a five minute stretch Dallas failed to score a single point as the Warriors ran off 18 straight. By the end of the third Golden State was up 86-63 and the Mavericks were done.
Golden State dominated the perimeter hitting 14 three-points with seven coming from the hand of Stephen Jackson. Not only did the Warriors appear to score at will, they dominated the glass as well with a 53-38 advantage. Golden State had three players record a double-double as Andris Biedrins had 12 points and 12 boards to join Davis and Barnes.
In a must win game the Mavericks fell apart. Dirk Nowitzki, the favorite to win the MVP, had a dreadful game shooting 2-13 from the floor for 8 points. After finishing the season with the NBA’s best record, 67-15, the number one seeded Mavericks failed to put it together against an eighth seeded Warriors team that beat them three times in the regular season.
The Warriors became the first eight seed to knock off a number one seed since the opening round playoffs moved to a seven game series.
Golden State will now play the winner of the Houston Rockets and Utah Jazz series. Game seven of that series will be played on Saturday in Houston.
