The most anticipated summer season of movies has arrived with the opening of “Spider-Man 3” hitting theaters today. In what will certainly be a weekend dominated by the web weaving crime fighter, the box-office should enjoy a healthy influx of dollars as moviegoers begin their annual migration to their local theater for the next three months.
Tobey Macguire and Kristen Dunst return in the third installment of the Stan Lee inspired “Spider-Man” franchise and look to set box-office records. While the film has received mixed reviews and purists may be disappointed it will undoubtedly be the weekend winner and could challenge the one-day record for highest grossing film. Earnings for “Spider-Man 3” will also get a boost with no real challengers for two weeks when “Shrek the Third” hits theaters.
Also opening this weekend is “Lucky You” with Drew Barrymore and Eric Bana. The movie centers around a semi-pro poker player who goes to great lengths to continue chasing his obsession/addiction. As part of the story Bana is constantly staring across the felt at his father, played by Robert Duvall, who happens to be a poker legend and of course the two don’t get along.
Keri Russell takes the lead role in “Waitress,” a film about a disgruntled pregnant wife who lives in the Deep South and waits tables. When a newcomer moves into town Russell sees it as a last ditch attempt at a happy relationship.
