President Barack Obama Warns Democrats not to “Jam” Healthcare Reforms through Senate

President Barack Obama has warned his fellow Democrats not to “jam” healthcare reforms through the Senate in response to Tuesday’s election results in Massachusetts.

The Democratic super-majority in the Senate was lost on Tuesday when Republican Scott Brown pulled off a stunning upset in the state’s special election to fill the late Edward Kennedy’s seat. Brown became the first Republican senator from Massachusetts since 1972 and more importantly gave the Republicans 41 seats in the U.S. Senate, a large enough number to block the Democrats’ healthcare plans.

With Brown’s win Democrats in the Senate quickly began to examine their healthcare bill and determine what parts could still pass in a vote. Brown campaigned against Obama’s healthcare plan and with him heading to Washington on Thursday the president’s plan may need to change significantly.

Obama warned Democrats not to try and push a vote on the healthcare reform plan prior to Brown arriving, saying “The Senate certainly shouldn't try to jam anything through until Scott Brown is seated.’
