The 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Wednesday morning was another painful reminder that the impoverished nation is still susceptible to further destruction.
It has been eight days since Haiti was rocked by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake that destroyed most of Port-au-Prince and left as many as 200,000 dead. On Wednesday many of the buildings already weakened from the initial quake put up little resistance to the 6.1-magnitude temblor. The quake sent people running from buildings and into the streets, leaving many to question when, if ever, they will feel safe again.
Rescue and relief efforts are in full-swing in Haiti, hoping to restore some sense of security for the people but distribution of food, water and medical supplies remains slow as the city’s infrastructure has been wiped out. Those delays have left thousands of survivors without food for more than a week while doctors have been forced to use saws for amputations, many carried out without an anesthetic.
