2010 Australian Open Round 2 Results: Justine Henin Edges Elena Dementieva in Two-Set Marathon to Advance

Justine Henin, who retired nearly a year and a half ago as the number one player in the world, showed she planned on picking up where she left off as she edged Elena Dementieva in two sets 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) to advance to the third round at the Australian Open.

Henin managed to take advantages of the opportunities Dementieva presented as she broke the Russian’s serve on seven of 15 occasions. While the nearly three hour match clearly took its toll on both women Henin managed to hold a clear advantage in winners with 43 compared to just 23 for Dementieva.

Henin left competitive tennis in 2008 after winning seven Grand Slam singles titles. The 27-year-old Belgian won the Australian Open in 2004, the U.S. Open in 2004 and 2007, and the French Open in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007. She reached the finals at Wimbledon twice but fell to Venus Williams in 2001 and Amélie Mauresmo in 2006; both matches went three sets.
