Floyd Mayweather Jr. wasn’t able to accomplish what he said he was going to do but he came out with the WBC title anyway after beating Oscar De La Hoya in a 12-round split decision.
During the buildup to the fight Mayweather promised to dominate his older opponent yet had to rely on his defense and speed to capture the 154-pound title. While there was little doubt that Mayweather won the fight it was much closer than the 30-year old had predicted.
In the end the judges favored Mayweather’s ability to land more punches compared to De La Hoya’s punches thrown. Oscar rattled off over 100 more punches, proving to be the more aggressive of the two fighters yet Mayweather was able to dance out of the way and throw effective counters to keep De La Hoya from landing anything too heavy.
The win improved Mayweather’s mark to 38-0 and earned him a title in his fifth weight class. Floyd picked up at least $10 million while the 34-year-old De La Hoya netted more than $25 million.
Mayweather was ahead on two scorecards, 116-112 and 115-113, while De La Hoya grabbed the third 115-113.
