Haiti Planning to House Up to 400,000 Homeless in Tented Villages

Haiti is planning to provide up to 400,000 homeless people refuge in tented villages set up just outside the capital of Port-au-Prince.

A devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake last week destroyed or damaged nearly every building and home inside Port-au-Prince, leaving as many as 1.5 million people homeless. As the country continues to deal with a death toll that could hit as high as 200,000 the move to house survivors appears to now be underway.

According to Interior Minister Paul Antoine Bien-Aime an initial 100,000 people would be sent to ten settlements near the suburb of Croix Des Bouquets. Additional settlements will be set up to accommodate another 300,000 people.

While the construction of tented villages will provide relief to the homeless it has been made clear that it is a temporary solution as the country is just three months away from facing the hurricane season.
