Angola Abolishes Direct Presidential Elections

The Angolan parliament has approved a new constitution that will abolish the country’s direct presidential elections. As part of the constitution the head of state will become the leader of the party that holds the majority in parliament.

A president will only be allowed to serve two five-year terms under the new constitution but current leader, President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who has served for more than three decades, would be allowed to start fresh in 2012 when the next polls are expected.

Allowing dos Santos to start fresh in 2012 could keep him in office until 2022.

Included in the new constitution is the abolition of the role of prime minister, enabling the president to select their own deputy to carry out that function.
