U.S. Supreme Court Strikes Down Limits on Campaign Funding for Companies

The United States Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling on Thursday, rejecting a long-standing measure that limited the amount of money a company could contribute to a political campaign.

With the stunning 5-4 vote, which effectively overturned a ban on businesses using their money to pay for campaign ads, the Supreme Court opened the door for more aggressive fundraising for political campaigns.

It won’t take long to see how the ruling plays out as mid-term elections are just months away.

While Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, who voted in the majority, called the limitations a form of censorship Justice John Paul Stevens, who voted in the minority, said the court’s decision could threaten “to undermine the integrity of elected institutions around the nation.”
