Record Box-Office Numbers for “Spider-Man 3”

Not content with a single day record, Spider-Man spun a web around the box-office record for opening weekend and surpassed its production budget with plenty of extra change for Tobey Maguire to dry clean his suit.

Friday’s introduction to the U.S. market raked in a one-day record of $59.3 million, surpassing the $55.8 million in booty “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” stashed last summer.

“Spider-Man 3” then set its sites on the three-day record held by ‘Pirates’ and blew those numbers out of the water. With an estimated $148 million at U.S. theaters it easily passed the previous opening weekend mark of $135.6 million set by Johnny Depp and co. last year.

Spider-Man has not only caught the U.S. markets but the overseas box-office has been all about the spandex spinner as well. With $227 million at the foreign box-office, Spider-Man 3 has reached $375 million at the ticket counter. The production budget for the flick cost $258 million.

There wasn’t much left over for the remaining movies as the rest of the Top 12 split $28 million amongst them.

For the past three weeks it had been “Disturbia” that controlled the box-office but this week the flick was a distant memory, bringing in $5.72 million to bring its total to $59.8 million in four weeks.
