2010 Australian Open Round 3 Results: Dinara Safina Makes Quick Work of Elena Baltacha, Advances to Fourth Round

Dinara Safina needed just 57 minutes to dispatch Elena Baltacha in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 in the third round of the Australian Open.

Safina was simply dominant as she broke Baltacha’s serve on five of seven opportunities and collected 19 winners compared to just four for her opponent. The Russian managed to collect points on 75% of her first serves put in play and had four aces in the match.

Safina has reached the finals of the French Open the last two years but fell to Ana Ivanovic in 2008 and then Svetlana Kuznetsova last year. In 2009 she reached the finals at the Australian Open but again fell, this time to Serena Williams. Despite never winning a Grand Slam singles title Safina reached the number one in the rankings on April 27, 2009 and is currently ranked second in the world.
