Andy Roddick found himself in the unusual position of being down a set but rattled off three straight sets to get past Feliciano Lopez 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to reach the fourth round at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Roddick turned to his power game to match the heavy hitting Lopez as both men hammered out 29 aces but it was the 60 unforced errors from the Spaniard that ultimately determined the outcome. Roddick was able to protect his serve, having it broken just once but he had a tough time with Lopez’s service game despite 17 chances to break he managed just three.
Roddick has one Grand Slam singles title, the 2003 U.S. Open, while he has reached three Wimbledon finals and the U.S. Open finals in 2006, all three finals losses came at the hands of Roger Federer. Roddick’s best finish at the Australian Open has been the semifinals, something he has accomplished four times, most recently last year where he fell to Federer.
