Rafael Nadal didn’t play his best tennis but the Spaniard played came up with the big points when he needed and fought his way past Philipp Kohlschreiber in four sets 6-4, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 to advance to the fourth round at the Australian Open.
Nadal had an uncharacteristic 38 unforced errors and dropped below 70% on first serve points but took advantage of his break point opportunities, breaking Kohlschreiber on five of 12 chances. Fortunately for Nadal the German finished with 58 unforced errors.
Nadal captured his first Australian Open title last year but then fell in the fourth round at the French Open to Robin Söderling, a Grand Slam event he had won the four previous years. Nadal then withdrew from Wimbledon due to a knee injury. In 2008 Nadal captured his first Wimbledon title leaving the U.S. Open as the only Grand Slam event the 23-year-old Spaniard hasn’t won.
