With the four remaining ‘Idol’ contestants taking on Bee Gees night on “American Idol” Tuesday there will be the added pressure that one slip can cost them their dreams.
So who fits the disco genre best? It seems that Blake Lewis could channel Barry Gibb for “Jive Talkin” and throw in a few beats of his own to continue doing what the judges love and that is make the song his own. With the exception of “Imagine” Lewis has done an above average job of proving he can take a song and morph it into his own style. Wheter or not that is a good thing is left for the voters but he will never be accused of being a karaoke singer.
It would seem natural for LaKisha Jones to get a crack at “Stayin Alive” after nearly everyone thought she had sung her way out of the competition. Last week’s Bon Jovi night miraculously saved the 27-year-old and with Simon declaring her back in the mix she could definitely trump the other ‘Idol’ hopefuls in a genre she should own.
Melinda Doolittle’s choice of song should be interesting. Fortunately for her the catalog of Bee Gees tunes could play into her favor and she has proven each week to be more than capable of handling whatever is thrown her way. Doolittle would probably be best suited for something like “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” but hearing her sing “Tragedy” would really be fun.
Jordin Sparks, despite her recent surge in popularity, could face some problems this week. After a dismal performance last week she’ll need to step it up and put away the nerves to deliver a knockout tonight. As Randy Jackson always reminds us, Sparks is 17-years-old and the pressure could be mounting on the Arizona native. Sparks should use her age for what it represents and have some fun. A good rendition of “You Should Be Dancing” could help but if she goes for something lighter like “Too Much Heaven” or “Love You Inside Out” it may not be believable.
Disco Night is always a crap shot on ‘American Idol’ because it really is a genre that if done well it is actually entertaining but if done poorly it is nails on the chalkboard. Bet on LaKisha giving the best performance with Melinda a close second. It’s time Blake and Jordin truly prove they belong in the same league.
