Former Boxing Champion Diego Corrales Killed in Motorcycle Accident

Former super featherweight and lightweight boxing champion Diego Corrales was killed in a motorcycle accident in Las Vegas on Monday night. Corrales was 29-years-old.

Corrales will forever be remembered by fight fans for his May 7, 2005 battle with Jose Luis Castillo. Corrales was floored twice in the tenth round before digging deep and landing a series of blows that stopped Castillo cold. The miraculous victory signified the determination and resolve displayed by Corrales through the majority of his fights.

According to police reports Corrales had been traveling at a high speed when his racing motorcycle hit the back of a car. Corrales had been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Corrales fought a memorable bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the super featherweight title in 2001. Mayweather dropped Corrales five times in the fight and his corner stopped the bout in the tenth round, it was Corrales’ first professional loss.

The 5’10 130 pounder compiled a 40-5 career record with his only losses coming at the hands of Mayweather Jr., Joel Casamayor (lost twice, beat him once), Castillo and Joshua Clottey.
