Carolina Panthers Sign Steve Smith to Three-Year Extension

The Carolina Panthers extended the contract of wide receiver Steve Smith on Tuesday in a deal that will keep Smith in Charlotte through the 2012 season.

The Smith deal comes on the heels of the Panthers’ decision to let go of 34-year-old wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. Smith, who will turn 28 on Saturday, will be looked upon to tutor the Panthers’ second round pick, wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett.

Smith was drafted by the Panthers in 2001 and has compiled 4,925 yards receiving and 30 touchdowns on 344 receptions. He has two rushing touchdowns to his credit as well.

The contract extension comes at the midway point for Smith’s current six-year deal that was paying $27 million. He had been slated to make $3.1 million this coming season.
