Former Pentagon Official Sentenced to Three Years for Spying

A judge has sentenced a former Pentagon official to three years in prison for passing “certain classified defense department documents and other information” to a Chinese spy.

James Fondren, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, held the position of deputy director of the US Pacific Command's Washington Liaison Office – a position that afforded him “top secret” security clearance. He was found guilty of using his position to gather information that he then passed on to a friend, Tai Shen Kuo.

Kuo, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Taiwan, was actually a spy for China and fed that information gained from Fondren to an official of the People’s Republic of China.

Fondren’s lawyer maintained that his client was unaware of Kuo’s involvement as  a spy but prosecutors suggested otherwise.

In handing down the three-year sentence the judge did note that the information passed from Fondren to Kuo did not pose any threat to U.S. national security
