UK Raises Terror Threat Level to “Severe,” Terrorist Attack “Highly Likely”

The United Kingdom has raised their terror threat level to “sever,” pushing the possibility of a terrorist attack to “highly likely” but fell short of warning such an attack was imminent.

According to Home Secretary Alan Johnson stressed that there had been no intelligence gathered that suggested an imminent attack. The decision to bump the threat level from “substantial” to “severe,” made by the UK’s Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, was said to have been made in response to the attempted bombing of a Northwest Airlines plane on Christmas Day.

The “severe” alert falls short of the highest warning level “critical” which suggests an attack is expected imminently.

In announcing the new terror threat Johnson stated “We still face a real and serious threat to the UK from international terrorism, so I would urge the public to remain vigilant and carry on reporting suspicious events to the appropriate authorities and to support the police and security services in their continuing efforts to discover, track and disrupt terrorist activity.”
