Rescue Efforts in Haiti Declared Over, Decision Called “Heartbreaking”

The United Nations has said the government of Haiti has made the decision to transition from the search and rescue phase to recovery eleven days after a devastating earthquake left and estimated 200,000 dead.

 

A UN spokeswoman, Elizabeth Byrs, said the decision to end the rescue operation was “heartbreaking” but was made following the advice of experts. That decision came as one day after two more people were found alive buried in debris in Port-au-Prince.

 

With the decision made the majority of search and rescue crews that descended on the city will now be leaving. Those who stay behind will help in the clean-up operation as well as distributing aid.
