Opposition Leader in Sri Lanka Accuses Ruling Party of Planning Violence to Win Upcoming Election

With Sri Lanka’s presidential election just days away the country’s main opposition leader Gen Sarath Fonseka has accused the ruling party of planning to use violence to control the outcome of the vote.

Fonseka said the violence would be used to deter voters from heading to the polls on Tuesday and warned the recent unrest that has led to four deaths will escalate behind the efforts of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Fonseka addressed the issue on Saturday telling supporters “They are getting ready for violence. The violence will support the rigging basically. The violence will reduce the voter attendance, then the rigging will take place.”

Rajapaksa has denied his party was planning any attempt to rig the election and has said security for the vote will be elevated. He has also denied any involvement with the recent violence.
