2010 Australian Open Round 4 Results: Rafael Nadal Takes Another Step in Defending Title, Reaches Quarterfinals with Win Over Ivo Karlovic

Rafael Nadal looked to struggle early against the 6-foot-10 Ivo Karlovic in their fourth round matchup at the Australian Open but the Spaniard eventually settled in and took apart the Croatian in four sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Nadal relied on his ability to stay disciplined, committing just 15 unforced errors in the match compared to 41 for Karlovic. Karlovic’s unforced errors neutralized his 28 aces in the match and kept him one step behind Nadal’s controlled style. That control allowed Nadal to be broken just once in the match while the Spaniard broke Karlovic three times.

Nadal captured his first Australian Open title last year but then fell in the fourth round at the French Open to Robin Söderling, a Grand Slam event he had won the four previous years. Nadal then withdrew from Wimbledon due to a knee injury. In 2008 Nadal captured his first Wimbledon title leaving the U.S. Open as the only Grand Slam event the 23-year-old Spaniard hasn’t won.
