Starr Tincup Team Completes 2007 Lavaman Triathlon

Integrated marketing company team races for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

The triathlon team representing Starr Tincup, an integrated marketing firm for business-to-business software and services companies, has completed the Olympic-distance Lavaman Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii, on April 1, 2007.

“I got the full aspect of Team in Training when we went to Hawaii,” said Dan McCarron. “That evening, it dawned on me what we had accomplished. The five Team in Training chapters present at the event collectively raised more than $1.1 million dollars.”

The Starr Tincup triathlon team’s goal was two-fold—to train for and complete the triathlon and to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through the Team in Training program. The Starr Tincup triathlon team trained and competed in the triathlon in honor of three heroes, people who live in Fort Worth, Texas, and who are battling a form of blood cancer. The team’s heroes are Paula, 45, Tristen, 11, and Maura, 9. All three of the heroes have been diagnosed with Leukemia and are seeking treatment or are in remission. They met and exceeded their fund-raising goal—the three athletes donated more than $25,000.

“This event was an incredible opportunity to see the best in people—the money they donated and the encouragement they provided was amazing, humbling and unexpected,” said Bret Starr, principal and co-founder of Starr Tincup. “The Lavaman Triathlon was at once the most challenging and rewarding event of my life. It wasn’t just the event itself, but rather the incredible positivity of the people involved. You never expect that kind of support.”

The team, which included Bret, Dan and Jennifer Starr, finished in times that were faster than their goal times. Jennifer finished 526, and her most competitive event was the swim at 37:46. Bret’s most competitive event was the cycling segment, and his time was 1:22:30. Dan’s most competitive event was the swim, and he completed the swim in 32:52.

“The race itself was amazing,” Jennifer said. “It felt so incredible to be among hundreds of people that had come together for the fight against blood cancers. I felt so happy and proud, even when I was getting passed by people 3 times my age, and especially when I was getting passed by cancer survivors. I can't wait to do it again!”

All three of the competitors commented on how positive the race experience was after months of training.

“The race and experience for me was two-fold,” Dan said. “Physically, it was  the best performance I’ve ever done—specifically the swim and the bike. On top of that, the people involved in the event were incredible.

“It was one of the most memorable moments for me in recent history.”

The event and the experience as a whole inspired the team to continue to compete. Dan is planning on competing in the Texas Man. Both he and Bret are actively considering century rides and the Ironman in 2008.
