Maria Kirilenko continued to slay the giants at the Australian Open, this time taking out Dinara Safina after the #2 ranked Russian was forced to retire late in the first set. The win pushed Kirilenko into the quarterfinals, the furthest run of her Grand Slam career.
Kirilenko was up 5-4 when Safina singled she couldn’t go on. Kirilenko opened her Australian Open with a stunning three set win over Maria Sharapova and has since marched through her side with little trouble, having not faced another three set match while building momentum.
Kirilenko has never won a Grand Slam singles title and her best finish had been last year’s Australian Open where she reached the fourth round, losing to Daniela Hantuchová. She reached the third round at the U.S. Open on four occasions while also reaching the third round at the French Open in 2006. Her best finish at Wimbledon has been a second round appearance.
