NFL Scores AFC Championship: Indianapolis Colts Punch Ticket to Super Bowl with Win Over NY Jets

Peyton Manning was 26/39 passing for 377 yards and three touchdowns, Pierre Garcon had 11 receptions for 151 yards and a TD, Austin Collie finished with seven catches for 123 yards and a score and the Indianapolis Colts defense held the New York Jets running game to just 86 yards in a 30-17 victory in the AFC Championship Game, punching their ticket to the Super Bowl on February 7.

After a scoreless first quarter it was the Colts who struck first blood as Matt Stover connected on a 25-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. New York responded quickly though as Mark Sanchez found Braylon Edwards on an 80-yard touchdown strike and the Jets moved in front 7-3. Indy managed to cut their deficit to 7-6 on a second Stover field goal but NY offense was clicking and when Sanchez found Dustin Keller on a 9-yard TD toss the Jets had some breathing room at 14-6. That eight-point cushion was then extended to 17-6 when Jay Feely kicked a 48-yard field goal with 2:11 left in the half and it looked like the Jets were positioning themselves for the upset. Manning was unfazed though and he need less than a minute to march the Colts down the field and hit Austin Collie on a 16-yard touchdown pass to cut the Indy deficit to 17-13 heading into the break.

After the Colts defense held the Jets on their first possession of the second half Manning moved the Indy offense once again, eventually finding Garcon on a 4-yard toss for a 20-17 advantage. The Indianapolis defense clamped down on the NFL’s number one rushing offense and forced Sanchez to go to the air and while the rookie QB played well he found it difficult to sustain drive. The Colts defense kept Manning and the offense on the field and when Dallas Clark hauled in a 15-yard touchdown toss midway through the fourth quarter the lead was 27-17 and Indy looked like a lock. That became a certainty following a Sanchez interception and a 21-yard Stover field goal to ice the game with 2:29 left in the game.
