Australian Open 2010 Round 4 Results: Venus Williams Overcomes Slow Start to Beat Francesca Schiavone, Advances to Quarterfinals

Venus Williams continued her chase for her first career Australian Open title, bouncing back from an ugly first set to get past Francesca Schiavone 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 and advance to the quarterfinals in Melbourne.

Venus struggled with her serve most of the match as she collected points on just 59% of her first serves put in play but Schiavone was even worse as the Italian managed points on a brutal 46% of her first serves put in play. Schiavone did take advantage of several opportunities as she broke Venus’ serve on five of six chances but Venus had eight breaks in the match.

Venus Williams has seven Grand Slam singles titles, five of them at Wimbledon and another two at the U.S. Open. The American has reached the finals at the Australian Open and the French Open but lost to her sister, Serena Williams, in both of those Grand Slam finals.
