Nikolay Davydenko certainly didn’t play flawless tennis but the Russian did enough to get past Fernando Verdasco in a five set marathon 6-2, 7-5, 4-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Davydenko committed 51 unforced errors in the match but his mistakes were erased by a staggering 81 unforced errors from Verdasco including 20 double faults. The Russian made use of his opportunities as well as he broke Verdasco’s serve on 7 of 12 chances.
Davydenko is still searching for his first Grand Slam singles title. He reached the semifinals at U.S. Open in 2006 and 2007. The Russian has also reached the semifinals of the French Open twice but has yet to advance to the finals at a Grand Slam event. This will be his fourth appearance in the quarterfinals at the Australian Open
